      Russell M. Bassett

      COLRAIN – Russell M. “Russ” Bassett, 87, of 43 Christian Hill Road, died peaceably at home on Sunday, March 22, 2009, surrounded by his devoted grandson, Russell A. Page, and his daughter, Ellie Bassett.

      He was born in Greenfield, May 10, 1921, the son of Joseph and Sadie (Pratt) Bassett. He was a graduate of Greenfield High School, Class of 1939.

      Russ was a veteran of World War II. A chief petty officer first class, he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. He was an Aviation Machinist Mate and Aierial Gunnery NAS.

      He was a professional photographer, a finished carpenter and woodcarver. He loved to travel.
      Russ was devoted to his family and always had an outreached hand to help those in need. He never hesitated to tell his family and friends how much he “loved them”.

      He is survived by his loving wife of nine years, Viola Bassett of Hudson, Fla.; his eldest daughter, Robin M. Bassett of Vermont; twin daughters, Candith H. Blake and her husband George A. of Vermont and Cheryl E. “Ellie” Bassett; grandchildren, Russell A. Page, Ian A. Blake, Dawn S. Wood, Kathryn M. Wood, Sara L. Wood-LeGate and her husband Gene LeGate and Margrette E. Wood-Domingue and her husband Bradley Domingue; great-grandchildren, Olivia H. Wood, Claire LeGate, Connor A. Page and Elijah A. Page.

      He was predeceased by his beloved with of 34 years, Margrette M. Bassett, who died in 1981, and great-granddaughter, Katelynne E. Page.

      Services will be held later in the spring at Howland Cemetery in Conway.

      In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 505 North Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105, in memory of his great-granddaughter, Katelynne E. Page.

      Arrangements are under the direction of Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield.

      He loved to travel, was an avid motorcyclist and pilot.
      Russ was devoted to his family and always had an outreached hand to help those in need. He never hesitated to tell his family and friends how much he ''loved them.''
