William F. Bassett Sr.
GREENFIELD - William F. Bassett, Sr., 99, of 31 Linden Avenue, died Friday, October 26th, 2007 at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center, following a short period of declining health with his loving family at his side.
A native of Guildford, Vermont, he was born on August 31st, 1908, a son to William Bassett and Mary (Morrissey) Bassett. He moved with his family to Conway, Massachusetts at the age of 5 and attended local public schools, later moving to Greenfield in 1926.
Bill (aka Francis) was a retired employee of the Lunt Silversmith's Company, having worked as a spinner for 48 years, retiring in 1974. He also held a concurrent part-time position for 33 years as a salesman for the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Store in Greenfield. Bill was a devout communicant of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Greenfield. He enjoyed furniture refinishing and upholstering as leisure time activities.
He married the former Ellen K. Dubreuil, on July 4th, 1936 in the former St. Mary's of the Assumption Parish in Turners Falls, MA and they celebrated nearly 61 years of marriage together prior to her passing in June of 1997.
Survivors include his loving sons, William F. Bassett, Jr., and his wife Rose-Marie of Greenfield, MA and Edward P. Bassett and his wife Lonna of Kennebunkport, ME. Additionally he leaves his devoted grandchildren and their families who include: William E. Bassett and his wife Ali, of Seattle, WA and their children Cooper and Lucia; Jennifer L. Bassett of Townsend, MA; Lynette M. Willard and her husband Jesse, of Freeport, ME and their children Michael and Laruen and Scott E. Bassett of Brighton, MA. Additionally there are several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his loving siblings, Grace Miller and Allen Bassett.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed on Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 at 9:00 AM, from Blessed Sacrament Church, 221 Federal Street, Greenfield, MA, with Rev. Fr. Timothy J. Campoli, Pastor, as the Celebrant.
Guests are requested to convene directly at the church location on the morning of the service. Rites of committal will follow in the Howland Cemetery, Conway, MA. The family will receive guests on Sunday, October 28th, 2007 from 2:00-4:00PM at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Warm the Children Fund, in care of The Recorder, Attn: Jane Kane, P.O. Box 1367, Greenfield, MA 01302-1367.
