    Notes
    • John was educated at Pine Woods, New York, at Madison University, Hamilton, New York, and at the Business College, Syracuse, New York. When he was 18 years old, he taught at Pine Woods. In 1866 he was a teller at the Central Bank of Oneida, Madison County, New York. He was asked by the directors of the bank to take charge of the wholesale commission business carried on by the bank at 51 Whitehall Street, New York City. He became a partner a short time after that and developed a large business. In 1873, he sold his interest in the Whitehall St. business and engaged in the safe business with his brother-in-law, H.H. Warner. He. Warner had charge of the Eastern office in Rochester, New York and John L. had charge of the Western office in Chicago at 51 State St. for several years. He sold his interest in the safe business and spent the summer of 1878 travelling throughout Europe for rest and recreation. He returned to Chicago and bought a home at 2522 Michigan Ave., and for a time he dealt in stocks, bonds and real estate. With his uncle Devillo Howard, he bought a large tract of land near Jonesborough, Craighead County, Arkansas. He was instrumental in the founding the town of Nettleton. He and his uncle also purchased 6,000 acres of land near Carlisle, Lonoke County, Arkansas, and stocked it with horses, cattle and sheep. Devillo managed the ranch for 2 years while John L. was in Chicago directing the shipping and general management. John L. purchased his uncle's interest in the ranch and continued to direct the general management from his Chicago office until his death, about 2 years later. He died unexpectedly as he was riding with his wife at the funeral of a friend in Chicago, May 2, 1887. He is buried with his daughter Gracie in his family lot in "Rose Hill" in Chicago, Illinois. In 1901, his widow was living in Rochester, New York.
