(page 304) Symmes Evans Browne (1837-1928) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His grandfather was the Reverend John W. Brown, who emigrated from England in1796 and settled in Cincinnati two years later. His father, Rev. Samuel John Brown, learned the printing business and invested in newspapers and real estate, amassing a considerable fortune as well as twelve children, of whom Symmes was the fifth surviving child.
