Arthur W. Bessette
SOUTH BURLINGTON — Arthur W. Bessette, 80, of SouthBurlington, died Sunday June 10, 2001, in his home following a shortillness. He was born in Burlington, October 20, 1920, the son of the lateArthur and Angelina (Laplant) Bessette. He was educated at the CathedralHigh School in Burlington. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary A.Bessette on February 20, 1993. He then married Mary Carmelita Whitehouse inSouth Burlington, November 17, 1996. Arthur was a veteran of World War II,the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War. He was employed with the U.S. AirForce for 30 years, retiring in 1972. He also retired from Chittenden Bankafter many years of employment there. He was a chartered member of theVermont Air Guard. Arthur was an avid bowler and loved to play golf, guitar,and travel. Arthur is survived by his wife Carmelita Bessette of SouthBurlington; a daughter, Pam Bossi and her husband, Charles, of EastFairfield; twin sons, James V. Bessette and his wife Donata of St. Albansand John D. “Jack” Bessette and his wife, Carol, Sassonne, of Milton; threegrandchildren, Jennifer Gagnon and her husband, Cosmo, Erika Bessette andKristi Bessette; one great-grandchild Zoe Gagnon; two sisters, Rita Bassi ofShelburne and Dorothy Barber and her husband, Arthur, of South Burlington; aspecial niece, Janie Jacobson and her husband, Bob, of Shelburne; manynieces, nephews, cousins and friends; three step-children, PatrickWhitehouse and his wife, Sandy, of New York, Lenny Whitehouse and his wife,Joni, of Burlington, Timothy Whitehouse and his wife, Tammy, of Huntington,Patricia Whitehouse, a special stepdaughter-in-law, Kathy Whitehouse, and 13step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-son, Michael Whitehouse. AMass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 13, at 11 a.m.in the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in South Burlington. In lieu offlowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting NurseAssociation or the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road,Colchester, Vt. 05446. Visiting hours will be Tuesday June 12 from 2 to 4and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski.

South Burlington – Arthur W. Bessette – A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. in St. John Vianney Catholic Church by the Rev. John Hamilton. The readings were proclaimed by Cosmo Gagnon. The offertory gifts were presented by Arthur’s grandchildren, Jennifer Gagnon, Erika Bessette and Kristi Bessette, and great-granddaughter Zoe Gagnon. Eucharistic minister was Janie Jacobson. Words of remembrance were shared by Cosmo Gagnon. Music was provided by Nancy Greene and Lois Desautels. Among the many attending the services was All-American Commander Clifton E. LaPlante, Howard Plant Post 782. Interment followed in New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington with Father Hamilton offering committal prayers. Full military honors were accorded the deceased by members of the Vermont Air National Guard. Bearers were Arthur’s sons, James Bessette and John “Jack” Bessette, and Cosmo Gagnon, Patrick Whitehouse, Lenny Whitehouse and Timothy Whitehouse. Arrangements were by the LaVigne Funeral Home, Winooski.
