Obituary of BURGESS BASSETT (1845 - 1929)
Burgess Bassett died at 84, Brewster's last survivor of the Civil War,
of pneumonia. In 1863 when he was 18, he enlisted in Company H, 23rd
Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, serving with that unit until the battle at
Kinston, North Carolina where he suffered a head wound. After his recovery he
went through the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Barston
Creek and Richmond with Grant's Army of the Potomac, distinguishing himself
among the 69 men Brewster sent to the war. After the war, he settled in
Brewster. He was a generous spirit to whom the poor never had to appeal twice
for help. He was a strong character, a rugged Christian and a supporter of the
Evangelican Church.
He is survived by his wife Ella; a son Frank of Salem; and a daughter,
Mrs. Mary Eldridge of Brewster. He had 4 grandchildren (3 line in Salem) and 4
great grandchildren of Curtis Eldredge of Brewster. Burial in Brewster Cemetery.
