Richard O. Bass; Former Miles trustee dies
FAIRFIELD, Ala. - Bishop Richard O. Bass, a former Miles College Board of Trustees Chairman, has died. He was 81.
Miles President Albert Sloan said Bass, who died July 21, brought a dynamic leadership and administrative style to the college during a critical period.
"Bishop Bass helped guide Miles to a new level, and he would be forever indebted to having been given the opportunity to serve at the helm of a great institution," he said.
Student enrollment increased under Bass' leadership while expansion efforts began in 1989. Miles honored him in the fall of 2000 with the dedication of the multimillion-dollar Richard O. Bass women's dormitory, which was part of the construction project.
Bass graduated from Lane College in 1947 and later received his master's of divinity degree from Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, Ill., in 1972.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the South Side CME Church.
