Timothy Lee Bessett

TIMOTHY LEE BESSETT - Lakeland, Florida - Timothy Bessett, 64, of Lakeland, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on September 5, 2009, while he and his wife Jeanette were on vacation on Anna Maria Island, Florida. Tim was born in Burlington, Vermont on March 1, 1945, the son of the late Harold and Meta (Jameson) Bessett. He was a longtime resident of South Burlington and moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1999 to live out his dream of retirement in Florida. Tim graduated from South Burlington High School in 1964, earning a letter in track. He entered the U.S Air Force shortly thereafter, stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. He was deployed for a year to Da Nang Air Force Base in Vietnam and was deployed to South Korea during the Pueblo crisis. Tim received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal. After discharge, he graduated from Hesser College in 1971, with a degree in computer science. He married Jeanette Corey on February 15, 1969, and was employed at Green Mountain Power for 19 years as a Manager in the Computer Department earning numerous certifications and awards for his accomplishments. While in Florida, he worked as Network Manager at Southwest Elementary School and received an appreciation award for web site development. Following in the footsteps of his father, Harold, Tim has held a 30 year lifetime membership of The Elks Club of Vermont. Tim is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanette, of 40 years; daughter Lynn, her partner Brian Gorton and daughter Alyssa of Shelburne, Vermont; brother Charles Bessett and wife Jeanette of Williston, their children Kevin and wife Jennifer of Richmond, Julie Schmid and husband Stevan and children Nicholas, Nathan and Hannah of Richmond, Amy Kleinschmidt and husband Edward and their children Shae and Erin of York Town, Virginia; sister-in-law Maureen and her daughter Olivia of East Fairfield; and nephew Jesse of Boston. Tim was predeceased by his brother David. Tim's many hobbies included Radio Control Model Aircrafts and Amateur Radio (N1BRQ) specializing in Satellite Radio, where he earned an advanced amateur radio license. Tim especially enjoyed going to the Ham Fest in New Hampshire. Traveling and spending many years traveling to the coast of Maine, Cape Cod and to many parts of Florida were just a few of the many passions Tim and his family shared. Tim was more than a husband, more than a father, more than a brother. He was our friend, and our mentor. He always strived to do the best he could do, not only for himself but also in helping others. It's only been a few days since you left us Tim, and already you are sorely missed. We will continue to look for your guidance with TJ your loving canine companion by your side. You will forever be in our hearts. Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a funeral service at 12 noon on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. Burial will follow at Resurrection Park Cemetery, Hinesburg Road, South Burlington.
