Dorothy G. Bassett
On August 8, 2026, 76 years and 2 days after she married the love of her life, Dorothy Grace Bassett,?? 95, joined him, as well as two of their children, her parents and sisters in Heaven, leaving behind a son, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends to cherish the memory of a lady who never stopped loving life and all it had to offer.
Dorothy was born on October 23, 1930 in Quincy, Massachusetts to George and Leona (Perry) Dewey. While Dorothy was in elementary school, the family moved to Oak Harbor. Following Dorothy?s graduation from Oak Harbor High School, Dorothy got a job at Bassett?s Market and met Dick, who she married on August 6, 1950. When the family needed additional income, Dorothy got her beautician?s license and opened The Beauty Nook in her home.
Managing it as she cared for young children, Dorothy ran the beauty shop for nearly twenty years before getting a real estate license and becoming a realtor for Batdorff Real Estate. Dorothy?s two professions were perfect for her, in that she never met a stranger. She thrived on connection with others and was delighted to run into people she knew wherever she went, whether in Ohio or in Florida, where she and Dick spent much of their retirement. She never missed a party if she could help it.
Dorothy?s biggest delight was her family. She loved attending events for her grandchildren near and far, having them stay overnight and making ?bingies for breakfast? (pronounced by the unindoctrinated as ?beignets?), and spending quality time with them. Dorothy?s Catholic faith was very important to her and sustained her through difficult
times in her life. She attended St. Boniface Catholic Church in Oak Harbor through most of her life, and Immaculate Conception in Port Clinton (and occasionally St. Joe?s in Marblehead) later in life.
Dorothy also enjoyed traveling the world, whether on trips through the grocery store, visiting children and grandchildren in Toronto and California, or a trip she went on ?just because.? A particular highlight was her 1978 trip with a group from St. Boniface, with whom she visited (among other places) Rome, Turkey, Iran, Israel, and Egypt. Dorothy saw the pyramids, flew over the Vatican as Pope John Paul II?s papacy was being proclaimed, and even rode a camel. Dorothy always said she was glad to have traveled to these locations when it was still safe to do so.
After Dick passed away in 2008, Dorothy moved to Port Clinton, where she discovered a whole new universe of friends she hadn?t met yet. Young and old, people met, loved and cared for Dorothy. Dorothy loved her twice-daily trips to the grocery store to talk to people, and prided herself on always having an event or gathering to go to most every night of the week.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Mike (Debbi) Bassett; grandchildren, Michael (Stacy) Bassett, Charlie (Joanna) Bassett, Elliott (Taylor) Bassett, Sammy (Shannon) Bassett and Brittany (Justin) Fuisz, and great-grandchildren Scottie Bassett and Fox and Everest Fuisz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; a daughter, Jody, and a son, David; her parents, and her two sisters, Nancy Linker and Carolyn Fic.
