Dudley Bassett was born November 29, 1881 near Hardinsburg, KY, in
Breckinridge County. He died December 16, 1940, in St. Bernard's Hospital in
Jonesboro, AR, after having a stroke earlier in the day. He was married to Laura
Mae McClamrock, December 26, 1911. Their children were: Jerry Bassett, born
September 17, 1912, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas (d. April 15, 1987); and Mary E.
Bassett, born October 31, 1914, Walnut Ridge, AR. (d. January 14, 1996, Mary
had retired. Prior to her retirement she had been secretary to US Senat
Wilbur Mills for 24 years or so).
Jerry Bassett married Helen L. Moore, August 11, 1949. Their children were :
Jerry Dudley Bassett, b. July 18, 1950; Richard Barry Bassett, b. December 8,
1952; and William Michael Bassett, b. March 7, 1956. Great-grandchildren were:
Tanner Dudley Bassett b. February 15, 1978; (son of Jerry Dudley) and Brett
Michael Bassett, b. June 26, 1985 (son of William Michael).
When Dudley Bassett was about 1 year old, his mother and father left their
home in Breckinridge Co., KY, to live in Arkansas. The other members of the
family were his brothers and sisters, Rachel, Alvah, Silas, Nancy, Ida and
Hattie. With all their worldly possessions they traveled down the Ohio River
to Cairo, IL, where they boarded a train on the Iron Mountain Railroad and
traveled to O'Kean, AR. From there they went to the Elmora Community, north of
Walnut Ridge on the Lawrence-Randolph County line. They went to this area in
Arkansas because a relative and some friends from Kentucky had come to
Arkansas and settled there.
Census and assessment records reveal that they had moved from the Elnora
Community to the Mt. Zion school district in Lawrence County. Their personal
property assessments were on the Mt. Zion assessment records of 1886 through
1890. Sometime after 1890 they moved from Mt. Zion to the town of Walnut
Ridge. The census records of 1900, show that they lived in Walnut Ridge,
Cambell Township. Listed were: Laura, age 54; Hattie age 22; Dudley, age 18 and
Russell Rainey, age 11.
Dudley attended schools in the Mt. Zion and Walnut Ridge schools and at
Mountain Home, AR. He completed a business course in Springfield, Missouri, at
Springfield Business College. He taught school at Mt. Zion and Portia. Later,
he clerked in Walnut Ridge Power & Light Company. He was court reporter in
District Circuit Court. From 1908-1912, he was elected Circuit Clerk, Lawrence
County. From 1913-1916 he was elected County Judge, Lawrence County. Fr
1917-1922, he worked at McClamrock Hardware and Furniture Company and Walnut
Ridge Wholesale Grocery Company. From 1923-1932 he was Vice President,
Lawrence County Bank. From 1932-1936; liquidated closed banks in Swifto
Newport and Walnut Ridge. From 1937-1940; Manager of White River Credit of
