S.H. Bassett
Webster, Ky. (Special to The Irvington Herald) ? Sidney Hayden Bassett, born Dec. 18, 1857, aged 78 years, 8 months, 24 days. Died Sept. 6, 1936. Mr. Bassett was a kind and noble citizen and loved by all who knew him ? for a number of years he had been in failing health and he with his faithful wife made their home with his son, Owen Bassett and Mrs. Bassett at Webster, where he has been tenderly and carefully watched over like a child through his last failing years. Despite his critical and helpless condition, Mr. Bassett was ever cheerful never murmuring or complaining, always glad to welcome his friends and appreciative of his family?s tender care.
He loved his seven grand children dearly and they were a sunlight in his home. He has one daughter, Mrs. Bob Chism, near Irvington, who was at his bedside as much as she possibly could be and was a dutiful daughter and the joy of her father.
Mr. Bassett was fortunate indeed with so many kind loved ones to administer to his needs. His daughter-in law gave his constant loving care and few people not knowing would have guessed her any other than his very own daughter. Mr. Chism was as kind as any son.
For many years Mr. and Mrs. Bassett made their home at Raymond and and it was once said that surely the ?Bassett? home was truly the ?Preachers? home for Mr. Bassett never failed to bid a hearty welcome to the pastor of his church and any visiting ministers.
He was loyal to his church which he loved and always in his place there as long as health would permit. He leaves a loyal Christian wife, who has faithfully trodden the pathway of life at his side through all the years. Worn and weary and in very frail health, but at her companion?s side until the end came trying to comfort and care for him as best her frail strength could.
Our hearts are torn with grief when we view death, enter a home and separate a love that has been true and unbroken through the years, aged companions nearing the end of the way, who would like to go all of the way together from this life into the eternal life.
But God has a purpose and death, though hard to understand as only life again to our departed in a world of love and understanding and hope anew to the loved ones left and amid heartaches we come to realized that we have ben more to live for. We must live to meet them and so Heaven now holds that dear loved one that waits and becons us to come up higher.
Dear Father your life has gone on. To know no more cares or strife. Our hearts are torn, weary and sad. It seems life again! will never, be be glad. But sometime, some day you smile. We will greet at the end of the way.
Hopes joyous rays once more, return. Our Father lives and all is well.?
Funeral services for Mr. Bassett were held in the Raymond Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 2 o?clock. The Rev. Shipp pastor of the church conducted the service, where an overflowing house of sorrowing friends and relatives paid tribute of respect to a many who had lived a good life. Burial was in the beautiful Raymond cemetery, acclaimed to be one of the loveliest, best kept cemetery in the county. Mr. J.D. Ashcraft had charge of the burial.
And so we sadly herald the passing of a kind and worthy citizen, S.H. Bassett.
