Vicinity Obituary ?? Joseph P. Bassett
RED CREEK ?? Joseph P. Bassett, 64, former mayor of Red Creek, died unexpectedly Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack at his village residence.
A son of Joseph and Mary Darby Bassett, he was born in Charlotte. He had lived in Red Creek for 54 years. He was former manager and part owner of the Timco Dog Food factory in Fair Haven. At the time of his death, he was manager of the Fruit Belt Preserving Co. plant in Sodus Center.
About five weeks ago, Mr. Bassett had suffered a slipped disc in an accident at the factory and had been taken to the hospital for an operation. He had returned home 10 days ago.
He was a member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, the Rotary Club, the Volunteer Fire Department and the New York State Cancer Association.
He also was past president of the ??Onsenya,? a summer camp for handicapped children, sponsored by Rotary clubs of the district.
In addition, he was past president of the Finger Lakes Easter Seals Association, and was serving as a director at the time of his death.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Catherine Bassett, librarian at the Red Creek High School; a daughter, Sharon of Santa Monica, Calif.; a son, William, now serving with the Navy; a granddaughter; six sisters, Mrs. James Collins of Chadwick, Mrs. Fred Tromley, Mrs. Andrew Kermis, Mrs. Cyril Streb and Mrs. Philip Neu, all of Rochester, and Mrs. Frank McCarthy of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Tom Bassett of Vestal; and several aunts and uncles.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Thomas Church with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the Finger Lakes Easter Seals Association or to the building fund at St. Thomas Church.

RED CREEK ? Joseph P. Bassett, 64, former mayor of this village, died at his home here yesterday. Born in Charlotte, he had lived here for 54 years.
Mr. Bassett was manager of the Sodus Center plant of the Fruit Belt Preserving Co. He was a member of St. Thomas Church here, the Rotary Club, fire department, and was past president of the Rotary Onsenya handicapped children?s camp near Willard. he was a member of the New York State Canner?s Association, past president and a director of the Finger lakes Easter Seal Association.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine; one daughter, Sharon, of Santa Monica, Calif.; one son, William, in the Navy; one grandchild, six sisters, Mrs. James Collins of Chadwick, Mrs. Fred Tromley, Mrs. Andrew Karmis, Mrs. Cyril Streb and Mrs. Philip Neu of Rochester and Mrs. Frank McCarthy of Chicago, Ill.; and one brother Thomas, of Vestel.
Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. tomorrow at the Becker Funeral Home here, where the Rosary will be said tonight at 8:30. Services will be at St. Thomas Cemetery.
