Blanche Bessett 1915-2008
Blanche “Edna” Bessett died May 8 at Cedar Glen Nursing Home, in Danvers, MA. Born to George and Blanche (Gagnon) Riviere in Holyoke on May 19, 1915, Edna was sister to George Riviere, Jr., and Cecile Minkalis. Edna was married to the late William Bessett of Holyoke for fifty years. She was a teacher for 24 years at Holyoke Day Nursery; after retiring, they moved to Derry, NH, to be with her only son, Richard, and his family. Edna is survived by her son and his wife, Julia, both of Calabash, NC, and two granddaughters; Danielle Bessett of Amherst and Michelle Bessett of Shrewsbury. She also leaves nieces and nephews, including Marian Kennedy of Manchester, CT, who was like a daughter to her, and her family. After the funeral on May 10 in St. Theresa’s parish in South Hadley, Edna was interred at the Precious Blood cemetery. Contributions in honor of Edna’s lifelong charity may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
