Newark Conference (1896)
Charles Howland Bassett was born in Great Hill, Connecticut, December 10, 1864, and died at Paterson, New Jersey, August 8, 1895. He gave his heart to the Lord when but eleven years of age, his conversion taking place at his father's hearthstone. His mother died when he was five years old, his father when he was sixteen. Two of his brothers were burned to death in 1882. His early years were spent on his father's farm. He graduated from Cazenovia in 1886, and from Syracuse University in 1890. During his college course he was stationed at Constantia, New York in the Northern New York Conference, where he did noble work. He joined the Northern New York Conference in 1890, and married in June of the same year Kate A. Adams, of North Manlius, New York. He was appointed to Cleveland, New York, in 1891, and again in 1892, but during that year was transferred to the Newark Conference, was appointed to Branchville, New Jersey, and began a course in Drew Seminary. The people at Branchville and the faculty and students at Drew knew him as an earnest Christian. In June 1895, he was appointed assistant pastor of Market Street Church, in Paterson. After a few weeks of faithful service typhoid fever prostrated him twelve days of intense suffering followed, and his sanctified spirit entered the heavens. To him the ministry was in no sense an isolated priesthood. He was buoyant and jovial in manner, a good singer, a delightful companion, a firm friend. He had a passion for serving souls. In the delirium of the fatal fever he began praying for Paterson, and seemed to be in agony lest some one would be lost. Later he prayed for fifty souls, and his last words were, "O Lord, save - O Lord". He is cut off in the morning of his manhood; his memory shall be a sacred treasure until we clasp hands in the great fraternity of heaven.
