Drowning Ends Park Outing
Man, 46, Sinks to Death In Levings Lake
As his terrified wife looked on, Oskar Bassett, 46, 212 Concord avenue, sank to his death in Levings park lake Sunday afternoon in the season’s first swimming fatality.
Bassett, who had gone with his family for an outing in the park, informed them about 4 p.m. that he was going for a brief swim. He had been in the water but a few moments when he began to struggle and shout for help.
As Mrs. Bassett watched, her husband vanished from sight, while three brothers who had been swimming nearby raced to the scene. The body was recovered in a few moments but all efforts to revive the man failed. According to David Klontz it is probably that he choked to death by swallowing water.
The grief-stricken wife told investigators that her husband had been in perfect health.
Rescuers were Wilbur Hollenbeck, 3231 10th street; Merlin and Francis Hollenbeck, 410 South Horace avenue. Time of the drowning was placed at 4:05 p.m. Deputy Sheriffs Emil Hiedeman, George Smith and Gus Johnson; Traffic Policeman Ray Anderson and a fire department inhalator squad were at the scene of the drowning on the west bank of the artificial lake. He was pronounced dead by Dr. W.J. O’Donnell.
Bassett was born March 26, 1894, at Ceylon, Minn., and served in the first world war. A resident of Rockford 25 years, he operated his own trucking business here.
Surviving are the widow, Hazel, and three children, Joseph, Virginia and Marie, all of Rockford. His mother, Mrs. Eva Bassett, Ceylon, Minn., and two sisters and three brothers also survive.
Funeral arrangements are being made at the McAllister-Julian funeral home, 304 North 5th street.
