Colbert ?Corky? Bassett
December 8, 1924 ? July 25, 2016 (age 91)
Colbert (Corky) Bassett, age 91 of Worthington, MN died July 25, 2016 at South Shore Care Center, Worthington, MN. He was born on December 8, 1924 on the family farm West of Currie, MN to Peter and Lydia (LaPlante) Bassett. He attended country school and grew up helping on the family farm.
At the age of 16 he began boxing with the Pop Terri Boxing Program in Slayton, MN. This was the beginning of his boxing career. He proceeded to win several boxing matches and acquired the title of Golden Gloves Champ in 1942 and 1943. At age 19, he enlisted in the army and served with the 151st Infantry, 38th Division in the Philippines and continued boxing to entertain the troops while overseas. After serving two years in the army, he returned to Sanborn, MN where he worked for his brother Peter at Bassett?s Locker.
On August 23, 1949 in Sanborn, MN, Corky and Ardell Dammann were united in marriage. In 1950 Corky and Ardell moved to Rushmore, MN where they opened Bassett?s Locker and Grocery Store until their retirement in 1990.
Corky enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and bowling. He also started the Rushmore baseball team and was a certified baseball umpire for many years. He was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, the V.F.W., American Legion, Eagles, Prairie View Golf Course and Worthington Senior Citizens. In 2015 Corky was named the Nobles County Outstanding Senior Citizen. Corky loved opening the Senior Center every morning to get the coffee ready for the pool and card players, he said it was like going to work every morning but more enjoyable. Besides the Locker business, Corky also drove school bus for over 40 years, worked the night shift at Campbell?s Soup for several years and worked at Prairie View Golf Course.
Corky was married to his loving and devoted wife Ardell for 63 years until she passed away in 2012. He is survived by two children, Steven (Rita) Bassett, Worthington and Julie (Bruce) Wendling, Beresford, SD. Five grandchildren, Lisa (Todd) Paulson, Joshua (Tiffany) Wendling, Ryan Wendling, Troy (Angie) Bassett and Brent (Rachel) Bassett. Seven great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kaiden and Addison Paulson, Olivia, Easton and Greyson Bassett and Briel Lu Wendling, along with several nieces and nephews.
Corky is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lloyd, Vincent, Harold, Peter, Raymond and Gerald and sisters, Priscilla McNulty, Ursula Daly and Francille Scott.
A time of fellowship will be from 9:30 to 11 am Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Worthington. A Memorial Mass will be 11 am Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church officiated by Fr. James Calahan & Deacon Vern Behrends. A private committal of cremains will take place at a later date.
