Dr. H. Arthur Bassett
Expired at His Home on Dayan Street Last Saturday Aged 62 Years
Dr. H. Arthur, 62, for 31 years a practicing physician in Lowville,
and who was held in high esteem in the community, expired Saturday at his home
on Dayan street, following an illness of three years. Dr. Bassett was born on
a farm near Glenfield, a son of Charles M. and Elizabeth Arthur Bassett. His
parents were descendants of pioneer settlers of this section of Lewis county.
He was graduated from Lowville Academy in 1897, attended the Albany Medical
College and later transferred to the Boston Medical College, where he w
graduated in 1905. He served an internship in Boston and was admitted to
practice in New York State in 1905, when he returned to his native county.
In 1914, he married Miss Mae Thomas, Lowville. She died in 193
During the World War, Dr. Bassett was a first lieutenant in the Medical
Corp at Camp Greenleaf, Ga. In 1918, he was discharged and resumed his medical
practice.
He was a member of the Lewis County Medical Society, American Legion
Post, 162, Lowville; Lowville Grange; Masonic Lodge, 134, F. and A.M.; Elks
Lodge 1605, Lowville, and the Lowville Fish and Game Club. He is survived by a
sister, Miss Erma Bassett, Park avenue.
Funeral services were held from his late residence at 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday. Rev. G.T. Anderson, Presbyterian church pastor, officiating. T
active bearers were Perry G. Williams, Leon Smith, E. E. Fowler, LeRoy Arthur,
R.J. Green, Harold Fairchild; honorary bearers, Dr. L.M. Campbell, Dr. R.D.
Gerrard, Dr. T. A. Lynch, Dr. B.T. Hunt.
