Lucas Bessette (1981 ? 2017) (Picture included)
Lucas Wilfred Bessette passed June 29, 2017, at the young age of 36.
Luke was born June 29, 1981, in Fairbanks. He was loved by all who knew him. He had a smile and personality we will all remember. Luke made friends easily and had lifelong friendships with many people he met through school and work.
An only child for the first nine years of his life, Luke was ecstatic when his brother, Leo, was born. He enjoyed his role as big brother and also as "Cousin Luke" when his little cousins came into the picture.
Luke was introduced to hockey at a young age. He excelled in the sport and continued throughout high school, where he was a standout player on the Monroe Rams Hockey Team. A fast, graceful skater and goal-making machine, he was a joy to watch in action on the ice. Luke showed leadership as a captain; his teammates were like brothers to him and their camaraderie touched everyone.
Luke was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Leopold Bessette; and infant cousin, Cody Bush.
He is survived by his mother, Susan Bessette; father, Tom Bessette; step-mom, Nancy; brother, Leo R. Bessette; maternal grandparents, Ed and Sue Zawadzki; paternal grandmother, Janet Bessette; uncles Kevin Zawadzki (Nicole), David Zawadzki, Kurt Zawadzki (Sherida), Rick Bessette, Paul Bessette and Dan Bessette; aunts Karen Bush (Rob), Cheryl Freshley (Mark) and Joy Lund; and numerous cousins.
Luke was fun-loving and strong-willed. He struggled with many obstacles the last few years of his life and was living in Hawaii at the time of his death.
Father Anastasi, of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Honolulu, was a special friend and mentor to Luke and a godsend to our family. He spent countless hours and endless resources helping Luke through his struggles. We are eternally grateful for Father Anastasi and the invaluable work he does through his church.
A memorial service will be held in late July at a date to be announced later.
