A native of Gates County, Bass was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Warwick Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Hazel Spivey Bass, survivors include: three daughters, Mary Ella Smith of Eure, N.C., Helen Marie Paul of Alexandria, Va., and Rose Nell Umphlett of Suffolk, Va.; one son, Jesse R. Bass of Hobbsville; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grand-, children. A funeral service was con ducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, in Warwick Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Eden ton-Chowan Rescue Squad. Miller Funeral Home of Gatesville was in charge of arrangements.
