Sylvester ?Sam? Bass, 84
ROCKFORD ? Sylvester ?Sam? Bass, passionately known as ?brother? to many loves ones, departed this life on Aug. 27, 2004, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 20, 1920, in Pinola, Miss., to Alonzo and Logie Bass. He attended schools in Pinola. Sylvester joined New Hymn Baptist Church in Pinola at a young age, later joined Bethel Baptist Church; he also attended St. Paul COGIC and Dominion Christian Center. Sylvester was united in marriage to Dessie Ree Pendleton on June 28, 1942, in Pinola. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, an as 303 Quarter Master; he was also in the European Theater of Operations from 1942 to 1945. Sylvester later moved to Rockford in November 1945. He was employed 30 years by Gunite Division of Kelsey Hayes before retiring. Stationed at Sunstrand Corporation, he was employed as a security officer by Pinkerton Security and Burns Security for 24 years. He leaves to cherish many loving memories: his beloved wife, Dessie Ree; daughters, Etta Jean (Ronnie) Martin and Joyce Elaine Bass, both of Rockford; sons, Billy Ray (Cassie) and Kenneth Duane (Sharon) Bass, both of Rockford; grandchildren, Marty Martin, Ronetta Martin, Echele (Larry) Scott, Karla (Jorge) Garcia, Brian Bass, LaShanda Moore, Barnett Lewis, Britanny James and Kendra Bass, all of Rockford, and Justine (Michael) Johnson of Bloomington; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchlildren; sister, Katherine Collins of Hammond, Ind.; brothers-in-law, Jamie (Alice) Pendleton, Nathaniel Harper; sister-in-law, Christine Williams; a host of nieces and nephews, aunts, cousins, uncles and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister, one brother and son, William Bass. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Oneal, Dr. Kenneth Hoskins, Dr. Karen Smorowski and staff; also to Rockford Memorial 3A Oncology Unit and Northern Illinois Hospice.
A home-going service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in Bethel Baptist Church, 724 Harrison Ave., where a visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time; Pastor Kerry L. Newburn will officiate. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were completed by Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home, 2429 W. State St. 9-1-2.
