Joseph L. Bassett

Joseph Lester Bassett, 83, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Joseph was born in Pleasant Point on October 7, 1939, son of George and Margaret (Polis) Bassett.
Joseph attended school at Pleasant Point and at an early age went to work in the woods with his father. He moved to Boston where he worked as a security guard until returning home to Maine. Being an avid outdoorsman, Joseph could often be found tipping or just enjoying nature. He had a big heart for animals and enjoyed feeding wildlife, sometimes out of his hand. Joseph also had a sweet tooth and was notorious for his sweets. Although he didn?t have any children, Joseph considered his nieces and nephews as his own kids.
In addition to his parents, George and Margaret, Joseph was predeceased by his siblings, Kenneth and George Bassett II, and Francis Smith; and nieces and nephews, William Smith, Holly Smith, George Bassett III, Patrick Bassett, Elvis Murphy, and Bernadette Bassett. Surviving are his nieces and nephews, Margaret Apt of Perry, Clifton Smith Jr. and companion Rachel Nicholas, Barbara Newell and companion Joseph Mitchell Sr. of Pleasant Point, Kathy Smith and companion Wayne Clossey of Dennysville, Ralph Smith Sr. of Perry, Ruby Griffin and husband Mike of Whiting, Lisa Dana and husband Rick of South Portland, David Francis III of Pleasant Point, Ruth Bassett of Pleasant Point, Leo Bassett and wife Jackie of CT, Stephan Bassett of Pleasant Point, and Sophia Murphy of Old Town; several great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins Thomas Bassett and wife Thelma of Pleasant Point, and Carroll Bassett and wife Seraphine of Indian Township; and his friend Sonny Morse of Perry.
Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Margaret?s house, 94 Thunder Rd., Perry, until 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 7. A graveside service will held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 7 at Pleasant Point Tribal Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
