Bassett, Major Edith I., 86, Retired Salvation Army Minister, of West Forest Avenue died Friday, February 23 at Miriam Hospital, Providence after a short illness.
Born April 28, 1920 in Nashua, New Hampshire, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Edith M. (Gibson) Bassett, the youngest of 6 children, now all deceased. She had lived in Pawtucket for the past 43 years.
She was a graduate of Nashua High School and The Salvation Army Officers Training College in New York City, where she was ordained a minister in The Salvation Army and was assigned in 1944 to assist the then Captain Flora L. Snow, where they became a popular team in the New England area for 63 years. In 1979, she came back to her beloved Pawtucket in retirement.
She was a loyal and dedicated associate leader and friend. Her work was primarily with the youth of the area and was a leader with the Women's Ministries.
She leaves and adopted daughter, Kathy-Jo B. Collins of Pawtucket; one grandson, US Air Force SSGT Michael G. Collins of Pawtucket; one granddaughter, Amanda J. Collins of Meridan, ID; her beloved friend of 63 years, Brigadier Flora L. Snow of Pawtucket; and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, 201 Pitman Street, Providence. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, MA. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Bellows-Falso Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln Thursday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Major Bassett's name may be sent to The Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center, 201 Pitman Street, Providence, RI 02906.
