      Dr. Lewis G. Bassett, retired professor, dies

      Dr. Lewis G. Bassett, a retired professor of chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic institute, Troy, died Tuesday, June 8, at Leonard hospital in Troy. He was 73.
      A native of Mechanicville, Dr. Bassett had lived in the town of Easton since 1945. A graduate of Mechanicville high school, he earned a degree in chemistry engineering from RPI in 1923. He received his master’s degree from Columbia university in 1981 and his doctorate from RPI in 1935.
      Dr. Bassett was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the army. He was a member of the Emmanuel United church of Mechanicville where he served as organist for 50 years. He was a Sunday school teacher for over 0 years and was still active in this field at the time of his death. He served as an older of the church.
      A 50-year member of Ondawa lodge, F.&A.M., Dr. Bassett was also a 50-year member of the American Chemistry society. He was a former member of the Greenwich central school board of education and had served on the Easton planning board.
      Dr. Bassett was the husband of the late Katherine E. Bassett. He is survived by one son, Richard C. Bassett of Canandaigua; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Allen H. Bassett.
      Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
      A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Emmanuel United church of Mechanicville.
      Contributions in memory of Dr. Bassett may be made to the Emmanuel United church organ fund or to the charity of one’s choice.
