NORTH CREEK. Elmer Bassett of North Creek slipped quietly away on the morning of October 9, 2005. In death as in life he never drew a great deal of attention to himself. Elmer celebrated his 93rd birthday on October 6th with his daughter Annie at his side. Elmer was visited often by his family and especially neighborhood friends like Sam Allison, David Tyrel, and Jim Caples. Elmer's spiritual needs were met by the regular visits of Father Fleming of St. James Catholic Church in North Creek and Father Sturtz of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Olmstedville. He became an avid reader in his last months at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home, adding novels to his supply of magazines and the Post Star. He had become ill following the death of his wife of 72 years, Laura Malark Bassett on May 25, 2004; a story weaver and an arm chair traveler. His charm and dry humor won the affection of his caretakers and family, even winning proposals for marriage in his last year of life. He was known to sport a mustache; played a mean game of bingo and sought out birds in the fields with his binoculars. His recently said to his daughter Calla I just love to hug you, if only I could reach my arms around you! Elmer never asked for much; he cherished his family immediate and particularly his nieces and nephews in the Malone area. They always remembered his birthday year after many year. Elmer Howard Bassett was born in 1912 in the town of Duane, the son of Ira Bassett and Calla Lilly (Wilson) Bassett. He received the Sacrament of Marriage with Laura Malark on June 13, 1942. They raised their four children on Bird Pond Road having settled there in 1952. Elmer was a loyal and proud employee of National Lead Corp. in Tahawus for 29 years, a flotation operator for precious titanium so coveted in the aeronautical and medical industries. His favorite past times were hunting and wandering the woods near his home, nearly always bringing back a few rabbits and a partridge, or a deer when in season. He enjoyed making maple syrup collecting the sap and boiling it down with strange contraptions invented for the occasion. His gardens fed the family for the winter and he loved to tinker with freaky cars a family trait per his dear nephew Jimm Eaton. After all, his daughter Calla was born in a Henry Jay, a classic if there was one. Elmer's brothers, Cecil, Lyle, Herbert and Harvey predeceased him as did his older sister Sabra (Bassett) Eaton. Survivors include four children; Gerald Bassett and wife Maria of Oriskany, Linda Lynn of Clifton Park, Annie Joy and husband Brad of Brant Lake; and daughter Dr. Calla Bassett and husband Dr. Robert Constantine of the Albany/Syracuse area. Elmer was blessed with six grandsons, four granddaughters, six great grandchildren, countless and cherished nephews, nieces and cousins. Friends may call on the family from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Wednesday at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 2809 Main St., Warrensburg. A Catholic Mass will be observed 10 am Thursday at St. John the Baptist Church in Chestertown with Fr. Bernard Turner officiating. Donations may be made to the American Rifle Association or the American Heart Association.
