Harriet Jane (Jones) Bass
Harriet Jane Bass (nee Jones) passed from this earth on Tuesday, May 21, following an earlier, accidental fall on her way to a women's luncheon. At her peaceful passing, she was surrounded by her two sons and her pastor at Hendrick Medical Center where she was born 72 years ago.
As a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, she was loved by all who knew her. Harriet was active with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pensadores Study Club, the Abilene High School Class of 1958, Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity, University of Texas Alumni, Randolph-Macon Woman's College Alumnae, and served on the Board of Trustees for McMurry University. She was a supporter of Buffalo Gap Historic Village, the Abilene Zoo, the Grace Museum, the Abilene Day Nursery, and many other local charities.
She was an active member at St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she married Henry Kinsolving Bass, Jr., on October 17, 1964. He preceded her in death in 2001. Harriet was the daughter of Morgan and Mary Elizabeth (nee Whatley) Jones, prominent citizens of Abilene. Henry's career took Harriet to live in California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Paris, France, as well as both Houston and Dallas before returning to her home in Abilene. She enjoyed the Beacon Sunday School class, as well as traveling, opera, and bridge, and gave freely of her accounting and organizational skills for many charities.
Harriet is survived by her son Henry Morgan Bass of Christiansburg, Virginia, his wife Lisa, and Harriet's grandsons Eric and Ethan. She is also survived by her son Charles and his wife Mary Kate of Corpus Christi. Also surviving her are her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. C. Griff Keyes (Kenan) of Little Rock, Arkansas, one niece, Mary Margaret Keyes, one nephew, Morgan Griffith Keyes, and one great-niece and great-nephew, as well as many cousins.
The family of Harriet Bass wishes to extend profound thanks to the staff at Hendrick Medical Center, Mrs. Patricia Stichler, Mrs. Barbara Gibson, and especially the Rev. (COL, Ret'd) Bill Libby.
Arrangements have been made through North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange Street, in Abilene. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening, May 28, 5:00 to 7:00. Memorial services will be at 10:00 on the morning of Wednesday, May 29, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street. Graveside services will follow at the Masonic Section of the City of Abilene Cemetery.
The family requests no flowers be sent. Donations may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church or to a favored charity.
