RUTLAND TOWN - Durwood Elroy Bassett, 77, a resident of Rutland Town and a winter resident of Webster, FL, died Friday evening at his home in Webster, FL following a long illness.
He was born on December 6, 1937, in Bridgewater, the son of Elwin and Bernice (Miner) Bassett.
Mr. Bassett graduated from the Rutland High School in 1955 and Randolph Agricultural College in 1956.
He was employed by the DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) as a milk tester for 12 years; then he became employed by the State of Vermont Liquor Department for 26 years; retiring in 1993.
Mr. Bassett enjoyed bowling, softball, hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his lifelong companion of 49 years, Muriel Mert Leonard of Rutland; 3 stepdaughters, Patricia Westburg and her husband Richard, Doreen Milo and her husband Bruce, and Maxine Balch, all of Rutland; 2 stepsons Michael Leonard of FL and Timothy Leonard of Whiter River Jct.; a sister, Geraldine Whitemore of Rutland, 10 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; niece Rebecca Arsenault; and nephews Roy Bo Wilkinson, Jeff Wilkinson and Bruce Whittemore.
He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Bassett, in 2009 and a niece, Alice Mann, in 2009.
Friends may call on Sunday May 31, 2015 from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main Street, Rutland, VT.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Killington. A reception will follow.
