MARTIN R. BESSETTE - Milton - Martin R. Bessette, 64, of Milton died peacefully June 20, 2011, in St. Albans after a courageous battle with cancer. Marty was born December 7, 1946, in Burlington, the son of the late Martin and Phyllis Bessette. Marty grew up in South Burlington and had been self-employed for most of his life. He operated a successful Trucking and Excavating business, as well as Milton Sand located on West Milton Road. He was a genius when it came to working with his hands and mechanically, and as an excavator, he had a very keen eye. He enjoyed a full, colorful life; learning to fly a helicopter was one of his greatest joys in life. Marty loved history and he also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and watching the birds every morning while drinking his coffee. He loved working and helping others. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and for his love of children. Marty was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, William Bessette. He is survived by his daughter, Nicole Bessette; his son, Bradley Bessette; and his stepchildren, Carole Jacobs and Michael Rollins. Marty loved his grandchildren, who gave him much joy throughout his life: Tiffany Bessette, Carmen and Sydney Shappy, Caleb Martin Hibbard, Bailey, Olivia and Brandon Bessette and Aspen Rollins. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Airianna Clifford and Keegan Bessette. He was fortunate to have some wonderful women in his life that loved him very much: Ellen Bessette, Marty Jacobs and Kerry Whalen. He had many lifetime friends, and these friends have been a true gift: Moe and Shelly Dubois, Herb Neiman, Mark Archembault, Refrigerator and Helicopter Eric, Salty, Mike Ryan, Jimmy Garrison, Judy Bilodeau, Kate and Amanda Bolgioni, Donald Shepard, Jeff Ploof and Orland Bessette. He will miss his coffee and conversations at the Milton Diner with the group they called the "Liars Club". He is survived also by his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Carol McGrath and Christine Durkin. The family would like to thank the VA Hospital in White River Junction and Colchester for the wonderful care they provided, as well as the Hospice of Franklin County for their compassion and care for Marty in his final days. A celebration of Marty's life will be held at the Eagles Club located at 42 Centre Drive in Milton on Thursday, June 23, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.minorfh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to COTS - Committee on Temporary Shelter, 95 North Avenue, Burlington, Vermont 05401.
