  Notes	James served in the Civil War, was taken prisoner by the south early in the war and was held until 1864. While in prison he learned to make violins. He was captain of one of the first boats to run on the Erie Canal. The family at one point had a large flag with twenty four stars that flew over his boat on his first trip on the canal. The cloth for the flag was hand spun and woven and has several bullet holes in it. Captain Jim lost an eye in the war and was given an eighty acre farm near Balston, New York by the U.S. government. He spent his later years here making violins.
