Obituary
Chagrin Falls, March 30 - (Special) - Harvey Bassett died at his home in this place Sunday, aged eighty-four years. He was born in Connecticut in 1811 and was one of the earliest settlers of Auburn township. He was one of the best known school instructors in Ohio and he retained all his faculties but hearing until the last, being able to read without spectacles as well as a person of twenty years.

Harvey Bassett, a former resident of Auburn for forty years, died at Chagrin Falls Sunday, 29th inst. aged 83 years. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and respected by all.

Harvey Bassett was born Connecticut; came to Auburn first in 1831, and taught school in Twinsburgh in the winter of 1831 and 1832; went back to Connecticut in 1832, and returned to Auburn again in 1845 and purchased a farm of Willis Woods, north of the corners, and in 1847 was married to Hannah Coats. They had four children - Mary E., Alice M., Lucy C., and Chattie I. Mr. Bassett resided in Auburn until 1860, when he sold out and purchased a farm near Chagrin Falls, where he now resides. Mary E. died at the age of seventeen years. Mr. Bassett brought the first lucifer matches into Auburn. Mrs. Bassett died in January, 1880.
