  Notes	Springfield Union, Wednesday, July 25, 1979 Lawrence ?Mate? Bassette, outstanding amateur golfer AGAWAM ? Lawrence ?Mate? H. Bassette, 69, of 116 High St., a retired clerk for the Springfield Post Office, with 30 years of service, died Tuesday in a local nursing home. Bassette was a noted amateur golfer and had won several area tournaments including the ?Kings of Golf? sponsored by WHYN-TV in 1961. A year earlier, he was the triple A golf champion of Springfield. A lifelong resident, he was a member of the Shaker Farms Country Club, the National Association of Federal Employees and the American Association of Retired Persons and the United Ostomy Association of America. He was also an Army veteran of World War II and a communicant of Ste. Therese Church. He leaves his wife, Josephine (Novelli) Bassette; a brother, Harry of West Springfield; and three sisters, Sylvia Lindstrom of East Longmeadow, Isabelle Bernatchez and Emeline Waite, both of Agawam. The funeral will be Friday at the Toomey-O?Brien Funeral Home, West Springfield, and in the church, with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery, West Springfield. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Springfield, or to the charity of one?s choice.
