Mrs. Philip R. Bassett Is Bride Of Marine
Carole J. Eby became the bride of Philip R. Bassett of El toro Marine Base, Santa Ana, Calif., Jan. 11 in a ceremony performed by the Rev. Ralph Sherman in the First Church of Christ.
Soloist Elva Profitt was accompanied by Carl Jones, organist, for the evening ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Eby Sr. of 2322 W. Fourth Ave. The bridegroom?s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Bassett of 1506 Ashmun St.
The bride wore a full length gown of bridal taffeta style with long sleeves, a scalloped scoop neckline and a bouffant skirt which formed a chapel trin. The gown was highlighted by self-fabric Dior roses on the neckline, down the front of the skirt and on the train. Her fingertip silk illusion veil was secured by a crown of crystals and pearls, and she carried a white orchid and ivy with streamers on a white Bible.
Joanne Westin of West Fourth Avenue was the maid of honor in a holly red chiffon street-length gown. She wore matching accessories and carried a colonial bouquet of white pompons and red feathered carnations.
Paul Bassett was best man for his brother. Ushers were James Curtis and Paul Cameron Jr.
Mrs. Eby chose a navy blue nylon lace over taffeta dress with a corsage of red tea roses and white feathered carnations. Mrs. Bassett wore a pumpkin colored linen suit with gold and bronze accessories and a corsage of white roses. The bridegroom?s grandmother, Mrs. Arthur Bell, wore a corsage of pink tea roses and white feathered carnations.
Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held for 100 guests in the church basement. Barbara McKiddie assisted with serving the cake; Sharon Eling, guest book; Cheryl Bates, punch bowl; and Mrs. Jack Eby Jr. and Mrs. Ted Eby poured.
Following a short wedding trip through Ontario, the bridegroom will be returning to California, where the new Mrs. Bassett will join him shortly.
The bride is a 1963 graduate of Sault High School. The bridegroom, who also attended Sault High, is presently with the Marine Corps stationed in California.
Guests attended the wedding from Brimley, Pickford, Rudyard and the Sault, Ont.

Carole J. Bassett
Carole J. Bassett of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. passed away at War Memorial Hospital on Sunday, September 4, 2011. She was born at War Memorial Hospital on July 30, 1945 to John and Pearl (Heaton) Eby, Sr. Carole was a 1963 graduate of Sault Area High School. She retired in 2008 from the City of Sault Ste. Marie Finance Department after 38 years of service.
Surviving Carole are her daughter Stacy (John) Storey, her most cherished granddaughters Kaitlyn and Taylor Storey, sister-in-laws Pat (the late Ted) Eby and Wanda (the late Jack) Eby in addition to many nieces and nephews. Also surviving Carole are her dear friends, Lisa King Windsor and Fern Spencer and her extended family.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jack and Ted and her lovely "fur person" Puddles.
Carole enjoyed berry picking, picnics, ceramics, bowling, reading and baking her beloved grandchildren's holiday treats. She loved Halloween and buying school supplies. She also loved animals, more specifically cats as she had many pet cats since early childhood.
Visitation and the funeral will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday, September 9, 2011 starting at 11 a.m. Reverend Tom Cash from the First Church of Christ will be officiating with the funeral services scheduled for 1 p.m. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens immediately following the service. The family suggests any memorials may be left to the Chippewa County Animal Control Shelter, 3660 S Mackinac Trail, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 or a charity of one's choice.
