John William Bassett
RANTOUL ? John William Bassett, 89, of Rantoul passed away Tuesday (Dec. 18, 2012) at his home. He was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Champaign, a son of Emmet Loren and Cora Lucille (Maile) Bassett. He married Mary (Deal) Farmer on Feb. 14, 1974. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, John Douglas Bassett of Champaign and James Franklin Bassett of Shallowwater, Texas; and two granddaughters. John worked for the Illinois Central Railroad as a locomotive engineer and retired in February 1984 after 43 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Danville Consistory, a life member of the Masonic Lodge, Western Star No. 240, a member of the Eastern Star, the Mohammed Shrine of Peoria and a member of the Illini Shrine Club of Champaign. He was a life member of American Legion Post 141 in Mount Vernon and a life member of the United Transportation Union. He also belonged to the Brotherhood of Locomotives Engineers No. 602. John had a street named after him, "Bassett Lane" in Champaign. A ceremony for the Masonic Rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul. Private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
