S.H. Bassett
The sad news reached Corning on Wednesday of the death of one of our largest land owners and prominent citizens, S.H. Bassett, known by nearly everybody as ?Sam Bassett?, whose death occurred that morning at 3 o?clock at a sanitarium at Excelsior Springs, Mo., where he had been since the first of March for treatment for neuritis. Recently appendicitis developed and at first he was considered too weak to undergo an operation but had gained strength and the operation was performed on Tuesday evening by a Kansas City specialist. Mr. Bassett rallied and talked with those about him and at midnight conversed with his daughter, Miss Tella, after which he fell asleep and quietly passed away at 8 o?clock. Mrs. Bassett and the daughter were the only members of the family who were with him. Mr. Bassett had always lives in Iowa and was born in Polk county, near Des Moines, Dec. 19, 1857, and at the time of his death was aged 65 years, 3 months and 29 days. With his parents and the family he went to Linn county, Iowa, when a young man and where he was married to Miss Jennie Clark Feb. 27, 1879, who survives him, and they continued to reside in Linn county nine years when they moved to Fayette county, Iowa, where the family continued to reside until their removal to Adams county in 1903 when he purchased 312 acres of E.F. Bettainnier, a part of the old French Colony and later added 140 acres to his holdings, making 612 acres. He continued to reside on his farm until his removal to Corning in 1919 when he purchased the site and built their home at 703 Grove avenue. To Mr. and Mrs. Bassett was born eight children, the oldest, Tommy, dying when seven years of age, the living being S.H. Bassett of Lenox, E.E. Bassett of Corning, Ray Bassett of Oakland, Calif., Mrs. R.F. Badgett of Corning, Orval Bassett of Brooks, Clarence Bassett who is in the army service at San Antonio, Texas, and Miss Stella at home. Mr. Bassett had always been one of our successful farmers and stock raisers and had a very large acquaintance and circle of friends. The remains were brought to Corning on Thursday morning on No. 6 and at the present time funeral arrangement have not been made, waiting a second reply from the son in California. Mr. Bassett had long been a member of the Presbyterian church and the services will be in charge of Rev. W.C. Miles of the Federate church and interment will be in Walnut Grove cemetery.
