BIOGRAPHY: Grandma Bertha was married prior to her marriage to James D. Petty andhad two children, Joe Cunningham and Alma Cunningham Hines. Bertha wasborn in Virginia, Missouri. My father, Vernon, told stories of living inWyoming and other western states. One story was about grandma taking herchildren west. Apparently, grandpa James was out west and Bertha loadedthe kids in the car of a man she knew and paid him to take them west.Dad talked about living for days on peanut butter sandwiches and didn'tcare much for peanut butter after that.
BIOGRAPHY: I remember that grandma and all her kids loved to play cards of any kind;pitch, Rook, poker, euker, canasta. Bertha didn' like to lose at cards, which was a trait she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
BIOGRAPHY: Bertha visited my family when we lived in Indiana and broke her legriding down the hill to our yard on Frank's bicycle. Dad was angry at uskids, knowing he couldn't get angry at grandma, who always did things herway.
BIOGRAPHY: Berha Petty was an independent woman and encouraged that trait in herfamily. She believed in hard work and had a knack for making sure othersgot things done.
