Mrs. Susie Bassett Killed in Denver
The community was immeasurably shocked last Thursday to hear that Mrs. Susie Bassett had been almost instantly killed in Denver. It seems that on Wednesday afternoon she was crossing the street at Fourteenth street and Tremont Place and while dodging one automobile she stepped directly in the path of another, which knocked her to the pavement and dragged her some distance. She was taken to the county hospital where she died four hours later.
Susan Amelia Rohrer was born June 18, 1863, at Polo, Illinois. On January 20, 1886, she was united in marriage to Ira F. Bassett. They immediately moved to Springfield, Nebraska, where they resided until 1907, when the moved to Colorado. Taking over a relinquishment five miles northwest of Cheyenne Wells, they made that their home until the death of Mr. Bassett, which occurred January 6, 1912, at which time she moved to Cheyenne Wells. In order that her children might have larger opportunities, she moved to Denver in the early part of the summer, where her oldest daughter, Miss Minnie Bassett, was a student nurse in St. Joseph?s hospital.
She is survived by six children, four sisters and two brothers. One of the sisters, Mrs. C.C. Miller of Carthage, Mo., came in time to be with the bereaved children at the funeral. The children are Miss Minnie Bassett, Mrs. Annie Paulson, Floyd, the only boy, Mildred, Lucy and Adah.
The funeral was held from the local Methodist church Sunday, Sept. 22, the Rev. A.R. Dennis delivering the sermon. Many sorrowing friends sent beautiful floral tributes both from Denver and here, in remembrance and sympathy. The body was laid to rest in Cheyenne Wells cemetery. Cheyenne Wells (Colo.) County News.
