      William Chapin

      William Chapin, son of Nathan (2) and Elizabeth (Castner) Chapin, was born October 17, 1802, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died there, September 20, 1888. He was connected for eight years with the Ohio Institution for the Blind, as a teacher and as principal, and for forty years was associated with the Pennsylvania Institution for the Education of the Blind.
      William Chapin married, March 26, 1828, at Brooklyn, New York, Elizabeth Hun Bassett, born April 6, 1798, died October 19, 1884, daughter of the Reverend Doctor John and Ann (Hun) Bassett of Albany, New York.
      Their eldest child was John B., a physician, born in New York City, December 4, 1829, and died at Canandaigua, New York, January 17, 1918. Educated in the public schools of Philadelphia and at Western Reserve and Williams colleges, he took an M.D. at Jefferson Medical College in 1853. He devoted his life to work for the insane, first in New York State, where he directed the establishment and early service of the Willard Asylum, then as physician-in-chief of the Department for the Insane of the Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. He became president of the American Meidco-Psychological Association in 1888.
      Dr. John B. Chapin married, March 18, 1858, Harriet E. Preston, who died in 1916. William and Elizabeth Hun (Bassett) Chapin?s fourth child was Anna Elizabeth Chapin, born 24 May 1836, at Milo, New York, and died about 1916. She married, September 20, 1860, at Philadephia, Pennsylvania, William Beatty Thompson.
