Bessette, Sr., 78, of Eastern Avenue, died Sunday, July 11, 1999 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Born in Plattsburgh on September 7, 1920, he was the son of the late George and Mary Murphy Bessette. He graduated from St. John's Grammar School in Plattsburgh and Watervliet High School, class of 1938. He was a US Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He worked for Montgomery Ward and Co. in Menands briefly before and after the war. He was employed by the Norton Company in Watervliet for 38 years as a machine operator, retiring 13 years ago. He was a member of the Norton Co. Golf and Bowling Leagues and a member of the Norton Retirees. He was a member of the Watervliet Senior Citizens and was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet and most recently Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Watervliet. He loved to golf, enjoyed woodworking and was a New York Yankee baseball fan. He was the beloved husband of the late Berenice M. McDonough Bessette, who died in 1991. Devoted and loving father of John M. Bessette and his wife, Judith of Cohoes, Richard W. Bessette and his wife, Susan of Freehold, N.J. and Michelle P. Smith and her husband, Charles of Watervliet; devoted brother of George Bessette and his wife, Joyce of Cossayuna; beloved friend and companion of Mary Wagner of Watervliet. Jack is also the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren and uncle to several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Watervliet, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Contributions may be made to either Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 or to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 410 23rd Street, Watervliet, NY 12189.
