Ryan, Clarence B. LATHAM Clarence B. Ryan, 89, of Latham, formerly of Plattsburgh, died on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes. Born in Cadyville, Clinton County, N.Y., he was son of the late Elmer T. and Julia Bassett Ryan. Mr. Ryan attended Cadyville High School until 1937 when, along with his family, he moved to Plattsburgh. It was there that he attended and graduated from Our Lady of Victory High School in 1941. For several months following his high school graduation, Mr. Ryan was employed by the Canadian Leather Company. He later worked as a train dispatcher for the Delaware & Hudson Railway Company and was elevated to the position of chief train dispatcher and director of power control and train operations, a position he retired from following 42 years of service. In 1944, Mr. Ryan's service to the D&H Railway was interrupted for two years by his service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/ww2/?personid=165329488&affiliateID=1329>. He was attached to the 769th Bomb Squadron, stationed in the Mariana Islands, and flew in eighteen missions. On September 2, 1945, he participated in flying air cover over Tokyo Bay during the armistice signing on board the USS Missouri which ended the war with Japan. His Pacific service concluded in a transfer to Clark Field in Luzon, Philippines, which lasted for approximately three months before a flight home to the U.S. ended his military service. He was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. with the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Air Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Soon following his discharge, Mr. Ryan proceeded to travel to Tulsa, Okla. where he married the former Jean Biggs. The two enjoyed more than 58 years of marriage before her passing away on February 27, 2004. Mr. Ryan was a long-time communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham where he, at one time, had served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and sang in both the funeral choir and regular church choir. He is survived by his loving daughter, Dr. Nancy Petersen of Marblehead, Mass; his cherished grandchildren, Ryan Petersen and his fiance Jody Roberts of Philadelphia, Pa. and Kate Petersen of Marblehead, Mass; his sisters, Dorothy Carr and Ruth Ryan of Plattsburgh, Rita Russell of Rochester, and Kitty Reiter of St. Louis, Mo. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial, to which all are invited to attend, will be celebrated on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 10 o'clock am in St. Ambrose Church, Latham. Interment, with military honors, will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery, Plattsburgh, on Monday, June 24 at 1 o'clock. Friends are also invited to visit with Mr. Ryan's family on Friday, June 21, 2013 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
