James (Jim) Bassett died July 16 at Springhill Manor in Grass Valley with his wife by his side. He was 84. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 24, at St. Patrick's Church in Grass Valley with a reception to follow. He was born July 30, 1925, in Lena, Wis. At 17, halfway through his senior year of high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. His duty in the South Pacific included work as an aviation radioman/radar operator and gunner on torpedo bombers. He also was an aircrewman in patrol and rescue aircraft. While stationed at the Naval Air Station at Moffett Field, Calif., he met his first wife, Edyth Skalko. In 1950, they purchased a prune orchard in Sunnyvale, Calif. They operated the orchard while Jim learned the printing trade at the Rosicrusion Press Ltd. In 1963, they moved to Grass Valley, purchasing land and developed the area on Cornwall and Rhode Island avenues, also known as Gold Hill. He also became a partner in the firm of Allert and Bassett Printing and Lithography. After the death of his first wife, he met and married his second wife Lois in 1982. He enjoyed grafting fruit tress, fly fishing and tying, and ballroom dancing. He was a lifelong contributor to the Christian Children's Fund. Jim was a sweet, gentle, sensitive man and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Lois; daughter Janet Smith and family of Grass Valley; son David Bassett and family of Longmeadow, Mass.; and stepdaughter Kathy Sartain and family of San Diego, Calif. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.
