NEW BEDFORD – Raymond Leo Bessette, 80, of New Bedford died Sunday, Sept., 7, 2003, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Lucy T. (Rostocki) Bessette; they were married 58 years.
A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was the son of the late Arthur N. and Laura A. (Paradis) Bessette. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church.
Mr. Bessette was a machinist at Continental Screw Co., and retired from Freetown Screw Co.
He was a World War II Navy veteran with the rank of boatswain’s mate second class. He was a recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal. European-African-Middle-Eastern Theater Medal with a bronze star and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Robert Bessette and his wife, Doreen, of South Dartmouth and Gary Bessette of New Bedford; four daughters, Dale Gillis and her husband, Bradford, of Nevada, Lee J. Niesig and her husband Richard, of New Bedford, Donna Coute and her husband, John, of East Providence and Debra L. Reed and her husband, Brian Rock, of New Bedford; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Arthur Bessette, Doris Blanchette and Lillian Bessette.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Mary Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.
