DEATH CLAIMS A GOOD MAN
From Daily Sentinel, Sept. 9, 1903
Ashley M. Bassett, the exemplary citizen, devoted husband and father
and honest man, departed this life at his home in this city this morning at 3
o'clock. Death followed an attack of the grip complicated by a paralytic
stroke. His illness set in about ten days ago. Mr. Bassett's five children and
faithful wife were at his bedside when the end came.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from the house at 2 o'cloc
Ashley M. Bassett was a native of New York, born 63 years ago. When a
young man he followed the star of empire westward and located in Wisconsin. He
remained there but a short time being attracted still farther west by t
growing prospects of the infant North star state. In 1866 he came to Martin
County and filed on a homestead in Tenhassen township. Here he resided more
than thirty years, and by industry and thrift wrought a comfortable home for
his family despite the discouraging hardships incident to early life in what
was then the far west. Nine years ago, his family being all grown and feeling
the weight of advancing years, he sold the old homestead and has since made
his home in this city - quiet, unassuming, industrious - a model citizen. If it
may be said of any one "He had not an enemy in the world". Ashley Basse
merits that it be said of him.
Mr. Bassett leaves to mourn him, of his immediate family, five grown
children, his devoted wife and a foster child, to whom he was greatly
attached, George Rave.
