Sumi Bassett, 87, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2017 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville.
She was born February 3, 1930 in Hakkaido, Japan, a daughter of the late Massishida and Taka Yamane.
She married Gerald Lee Bassett in Japan in 1960 and he preceded her in death in 1981.
She had worked many years in food service at Burns Cafeteria in Granite City.
Sumi enjoyed being active with the Granite City Senior Citizens and attending Grace Baptist Church. She also enjoyed playing bingo, doing yardwork, shopping, fishing and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her dear family friends, Lynn and Beth Jones of Moro; their children, Rachel (Jeffrey) Woodson, Leah (Jon) Sanchez and Eric Jones and their children, Gemma and Zane.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by ten siblings and her longtime companion, William Dale Jones whom passed away in 2001.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 6:30 p.m. with Bro. Lynn Jones officiating.
Private burial will be at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Road in Granite City.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of one?s choice and may be accepted at the funeral home.
