    • SURNAME: English also spelled Englis. In the pension file it is mostly spelled Englis.

      BIRTH: Revolutionary War pension file of Andrew English - W23015 (FHL film #970929) - According to an affadavit dated 16 Apr 1816 and signed by Andrew English, he was "born on the 13th day of Feby (old style) 1752 in the town of Palmer, Hampshire, Massachusetts." In 1752 Palmer was in Hampshire County, but it is now in Hampden County, Massachusetts.

      In an affadavit dated 20 Mar 1903, Andrew English's granddaughter, Caroline Turner, stated, "Andrew Englis was born in the town of Palmer, Hampshire County, (in the then province) now state of Massachusetts on the 15th day of Feb old style 1752."

      MARRIAGE: Revolutionary War pension file of Andrew Englis - W23015 (FHL film #970929). According to an affidavit dated 29 January 1839 by Rachel English, "she was married to ...Andrew Englis on the 26th day of November seventeen-hundred and eighty-six."

      In another affidavit dated 29 May 1839 by Andrew Moore (a brother to Rachel) he states, "That he this deponent was present at the solemnization of the marriage between the said Andrew English and the said Rachel English which ceremony was performed by the Reverend Mr. How sometime in the fall of the year 1787 at Oquago on the Susquehannah River (now Windsor in the county of Broome, New York)." In another affidavit by Andrew Moore dated 1 July 1839 he states: "he recollects the marriage of his sister Rachel to Andrew English... in the fall of the year 1787 and as he believes in the month of November. The said marriage was had at the house of this deponents Father's on the farm in the said town of Windsor where this deponent now resides. . . . he knows that the said marriage took place the second year after his fathers family removed on the Susquehannah River from near Schenectady in New York."

      PLACE OF MARRIAGE: Ouaquago was also spelled Oquago and located along the Susquehanna River. It later became part of Windsor. In 1786 it was in Montgomery County, but the area is now in Broome County, New York.

      DEATH: Tully Cemetery, Andrew Enlish's tombstone reads: "Mr. Andrew English, Esq. died May 20th 1832 ae 80y 3m & 11d."

      In the Revolutionary War pension file of Andrew Englis - W23015 (FHL film # 970929), Andrew English's death date is recorded as 26 May 1832. See affidavits dated 29 Jan 1839, 20 Mar 1903, and 19 May 1840. He died of dropsy at Tully.

      CENSUS: Andrew English has been found in the 1820 and 1830 censuses:

      1820 census of Elmira, Tioga, NY, p. 303 (BYU film #79). In this census the Andrew English (spelled Englis) family consisted of a male 45 years old and over, a female 45 years old and over, a male between the age of 16 and 26, two females between the age of 16 and 26, a female between 10 and 16, a male between 10 and 16, and two females and one male under 10.

      1830 census of Tully, Onondaga, NY, p. 325 (BYU #100). In this census the Andrew English household consisted of a male between 70 and 80 years old, a female between 50 and 60, a female between 20 and 30, and a female between 15 and 20.

      LAND: Andrew English bought 75 acres in Tully, Onondaga, NY lot 18 on 20 Mar 1821 from Phineas & Elizabeth Henderson. See Onondaga County land records Book AA, p. 31 (FHL #870426).

      Andrew and Rachel English sold 50 acres of lot 18 in Tully, Onondaga, NY on 31 Oct 1831 to Henry Seeley - Book VV, pp. 232-234 (FHL film #872509).

      MILITARY SERVICE: Revolutionary War pension file of Andrew Englis - W23015 (FHL# 970929). He served in the Revolutionary War from 1775 to Nov 1783.

      REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS IN ONONDAGA COUNTY, NY, p.253 (FHL US/CAN 974.765 M23b): "Andrew English ... The name appears in Capt. Joseph Bard's Co., Col. Woodbridge's 25th Mass. Regiment, from Stockbridge in '75. Also as sergeant in Capt. Peter Porter's Co., Col. Brown's Regiment, '76. In 1790 it was recorded in Salem, Mass. and the grave is locally known as that of a soldier. A non. Cent. says he was 'a Captain in the Revolution."

      OCCUPATION: Andrew English was a school teacher in Niskayuna, Schenectady, New York before the Revolutionary War. After the war he was a farmer. See Revolutionary War pension file of Andrew English (FHL film #970929).

Each of whom are of full age, except the said Rachael Bassett and Jane Englis, who are minors under the age of 21... Personal estate.. valued at $800.00... Appointment of administrator made 11 June.
