Obituary
Walter J. Bassett, 76 yeard old, died Wednesday evening at his home in the east part of the city following an extended illness. The funeral was held Sunday from the Christian church in Mercer and was conducted by the Rev. C.E. Nichols and J. Grady Kauffman. Burial was made in the Lowry cemetery with members of the Masonic Lodge in charge of the services at the grave.
Mr. Bassett, a son of Elias and Melissa Bassett, was born in Decatur county, Iowa, June 10, 1887. He was married to Hattie O. Bowman at Leon March 11, 1891, and they became the parents of a son, John Lyman, of the home. Mr. Bassett united with the Methodist church in 1906 and was active in the programs of his church. He became a member of the Revenna Lodge of the A.F. & A.M. in 1900 and when the lodge surrended its charter, he transferred his membership to the Princeton Lodge.
Besides his wife and son he is survived by two grandsons, Lyman W. of Kansas City and Franklin, who is serving his country in the armed forces as a paratrooper. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett and son moved to Mercer county in 1904.
