Dr. S.Q. Bass Is Dead
First To Sew Up Heart
Surgeon Served as Personalle Head of Army Ordnance Unit During War

Cincinnati, March 4. - Dr. Samuel Q. Bass, 65, credited as the first surgeon to sew up a human heart, died in a hospital yesterday after illness of two weeks.
Dr. Bass, an alumnus of Ohio Wesleyan University, received a Medical Association medal for his surgical feat, performed in Chicago shortly before he served in the World War.
At the time he was practicing medicine in Chicago. The patient was a young woman who suffered heart injuries when the shaft of a buggy penetrated her chest.
Dr. Bass closed one wound with nine stitches and the woman recovered.
Dr. Bass became personnel director of the Ordnance Department of the Army during the war, with the rank of captain.
A son, John Quincy Bass, is pianist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
