      Lillian Tate

Tate, Lillian Cullum. Lillian Cullum Tate, 93, died peacefully in her sleep on
August 19, 2008, in Dallas, Texas where her Cullum and Bassett ancestors
settled as pioneers. She graduated from North Dallas High School and received
her BA from Southern Methodist University. During college she was president of
Tri Delta Sorority, was on the Student Council, was in Zeta Phi Eta speech
fraternity, and was a member of the SMU Mortar Board. She married Raymond Lee
Tate and they had three daughters, Toby, Judy, and Priscilla. Throughout her
life, she sought to combine a career as a professional book reviewer wi
service to her community. She was an active member of the North Dallas Red
Cross, the Mary K. Craig Class, the Dallas Woman's Club, the LackaDaisy Garden
Club, and the Rondo Club. She was devoted to her church, Oak Lawn United
Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member. She taught a Women's Bible
Class there for almost seventy years and it continues in her honor as t
Lillian Tate Class. She was the first woman chosen to chair the Administrative
Board of her church and she also chaired its Board of Trustees. While she and
her family participated in the American Field Service Program, they had
foreign students come to live in their home and sent their own daughters to
live abroad with host families. She traveled all over the world with family
and friends. However, her favorite place to visit became her daughter
Priscilla's country home in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. Lillian was
a passionate reader and raconteur and always kept up with the current literary
scene. She wanted her book reviews to convey to her audiences her own love of
books and reading. On the last evening of her life she was still recommending
books and articles to family members. Lillian was an early student of renowned
wildlife painter Reveau Bassett who was her uncle and her short stories and
essays have chronicled the early history of Dallas. She will always be
remembered for her graciousness, her mental clarity and her wonderful story
telling ability. Lillian was predeceased by her husband Raymond Tate, h
daughters Toby Tate and Judy McCall and her granddaughter Elisa McCall.
Lillian is survived by her daughter Priscilla Tate, and Priscilla's husband,
Bruce Forster; grandson and wife Jacob Forster and Lisa Nagid; grandsons Scott
Forster and Adam Forster; her grandson and his wife, Tate McCall and Linda
McCall, and their daughters Katherine and Lily; her granddaughter and h
husband, Sally McCall Van Winkle and Danny Van Winkle, and their son, Charlie
Mac. She is also survived by numerous cousins and beloved friends. Visitation
