    Notes
    • SERRING PALMER

The "Palmer Family" of the United States held a reunion at Stonington, Connecticut, August 10 and 11, 1881, the anniversary of the battle of Stonington, in the war of 1812. On the handsomely engraved invitation card sent out on that occasion, and outline of the genealogy of the family is given, showing that the Palmer's originated in Nottinghamshire, England, that Walter Palmer came to America in 1621, settling first at Charlestown, that he removed to Seekouk in 1643, and finally settled at Pawcutuck (Stonington) in 1653. The card states that he was one of the first settlers of Stonington, and that now his descendants number thousands.
To this Palmer family, Mr. Serring Palmer, of Chillicothy, belongs. His grandfather, David Palmer, removed from New England to Canada in 1790, settled about thirty mile west of Niagara Falls, in what was then a wilderness. The place afterward became a trading post, known by the name of "The Forty", the number given to a creek that ran through it. It is now a thriving village called Grimsby, in Lincoln county. Here Mahlon Palmer, father of our Mr. Palmer, was born in 1804, and where he pursued the occupation of carpenter. His father had been a farmer and held various offices under the colonial government. Mahlon Palmer after his marriage removed to a place then known as "The Twelve", but since called St. Anne. Here Mr. Serring Palmer was born in 1836, during what was then called McKinie's Rebellion. When he was four years old his parents removed to Wellington Square, now called Burlington, in halton county, Canada, where he passed his youth, on the banks of Lake Ontario. At the age of 18 he went to learn the tinner's trade with an American named Penfield. In the fall of 1859, he was married Miss Lyda Bassett, of Lockport, N.Y.
In the fall of 1860, Mr. Palmer, his wife and child removed to Rockford, Ill., where he acted as foreman for a Mr. J. Severeign until the fall of 1867, when he removed to Des Moines, Iowa, to go into business with a Mr. Albertson. Owing to business difficulties, the firm was dissolved and for two years Mr. Palmer was occupied as a farmer. Not being suited to that employment, he removed in the fall of 1870 to Chillicothe, where he has ever since resided with his family.
When he first came here he worked with Messrs. Bearce & Lockwood. In 1875, however, he went to St. Joseph and worked there for 15 months, his family still reamining here. At St Joe he learned the business of making galvinized iron cornice and putting on slate roofing. In 1876 he returned home, went into business for himself and is still carring it on with success.
Mr. Palmer is well known as one of the best mechanics in Chillicothe, being in some departments of his business without a rival. Whatever can be made out of sheet tin, sheet iron, sheet metal of any kind, he can make, and make it well. He has built up a prosperous trade which he holds by his skill and by diligent attention to business.
