Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald M. Bessette Sr., 81, of Canton will be Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, Canton with Rev. Kevin O'Brien celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Gerald died on Thursday, June 19, 2014 while at home, surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home on Sunday, June 22, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 6805 US Hwy. 11 Potsdam, N.Y. 13676.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan Bessette of Canton; sons, John Bessette of Canton, Gerald M. Bessette Jr. and wife Shannon of Canton; five daughters, Linda Randi and husband Matt of Canton, Kimberley Zeller and husband Wesley of Canton, Pamela Easton and husband Chris of Gouverneur, Anita Francis and husband Scott of Canton and Brandi Symons and husband Charles of Cortland; and 14 grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Nelson Bessette and wife Rogene of Canton, Burton Bessette of Russell, and Warren Bessette and wife Betty of Canton and three sisters, Anne Scott of Russell, Noreen Sheridan and husband Neil of Canton and Eleven Corbine and husband Donald of Russell.
Gerald is predeceased by a brother Reardon Bessette.
Gerald was born January 11, 1933, the son of the late John B. and Nora Ellen (Warren) Bessette. He attended Canton schools. Gerald served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He married Susan Fenlong on July 16, 1960 at St. Paul's Church in Pyrites. Gerald was a farmer and worked for 35 years as a union carpenter. Gerald enjoyed watching New York sports teams. He was a past member of the Canton VFW Post 1231. He enjoyed farming, fishing and playing baseball. He loved watching his children's and grandchildren's sporting events.
