Burton J. Bessette, Sr., 87, Russell
Mass of Christian Burial for Burton J. Bessette Sr., 87, of Russell, will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Oratory in Pyrites, with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, celebrating.
Burial will follow in the North Russell Cemetery.
Burt died on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at the O'Leary Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to the Knights of Columbus Sarto Council.
Burt is survived by his six children, Nora E. Bessette of Star Lake, Julie Rubado and husband, Hollie of Hermon, Burton Jr. of Russell, Tina Bristol and husband, Sidney of Russell, Kevin Michael of Russell and Allison Martinez of Hamburg, NY; and by eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Nelson Bessette and wife, Rogene of Canton, Warren Bessette and wife, Betty of Canton; three sisters, Anne Scott of Russell, Noreen Sheridan and husband, Neil of Canton, Elevene Corbine and husband, Donald of Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burt is predeceased by a granddaughter, Melissa Jandreau and by brothers, Reardon and Gerald Bessette Sr.
Burt was born on February 12, 1928 in Pyrites, the son of the late, John B. and Nora Ellen (Warren) Bessette.
He attended Pyrites Schools.
He married Laura Corbine in 1956.
Burton served in the US Army from 1948 to 1952 serving in the Korean War.
He worked for J& L Steel as a mechanic for 33 years, retiring in 1976 and later for the Town of Russell for 10 years, also as a mechanic.
Burt was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 1231 and the Rainbow Brook Hunting Club. He enjoyed, hunting, fishing, camping and spending time at Boyd Pond.
