Chauncey R. Bass
1926-2001
Chauncey Robert Bass, 74, died Friday, February 23, 2001 in the Beverly Rehab Center of Pittsburg, Ks. where he had resided for the past 14 years.
He was born July 26, 1926 in Walnut, Ks., the son of Mason M. and Anna E. Wilson Bass. He attended schools in Walnut.
He joined the U.S. Army in November 1945, serving in Germany during World War II and the German occupation. He was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star and the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.
After being discharged from the service in 1946, he went into partnership with his father in the logging business in Walnut. He worked as a lumber jack in Oregon and worked at the Parsons Ammunition Plant during the Korean War. He later returned to the logging business until being disable by an illness in the 1950s.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1372 in Columbus, Ks. and the American Legion Guard Lee Post #292 in Walnut.
Survivors include his mother, Anna E. Bass, Walnut; two sisters, Opal E. Carson of Mountain Home, Ark. and Pauline A. Wood of Cambria, Ca.; and one brother, Mason M. Bass Jr. of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father, Mason M. Bass Sr. in 1999.
A military graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Walnut Cemetery with the Rev. Garland Bohn officiating. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the Murdock Funeral Home, 132 E. Pine, Columbus.
Memorials are suggested to the Beverly Rehab Center Activity Fund of Pittsburg and may be left of sent to the funeral home.
